Lejeunes show up in Micmac records in Canada

Louisiana ancestors

In the Bay St. George area of Newfoundland, there still reside many Lejeunes (Youngs). Frank Russel, a member of the Mi'kmaq band in Stephenville, Newfoundland, read about the lejeunes in a recent column format and has submitted a wealth of information about the lineage.

Russell's lineage carried him into research areas not previously known to him. The Lejeunes, now Youngs, were all documented as Micmacs on the Micmac-Maliseet Institute's Maliseet vital statistics records, of which he has submitted copies for use in this format. He found it difficult to keep the family ties straight because they kept intermarrying, common for aboriginal people "seeking to keep the blood strong." Of particular interest to many researchers will be the Joseph Young story. He was known as Joe Jep or Zoe-Zep. which is simply the Micmac way of pronouncing his Christian name. Joseph was a brother of Peter, and they were sons of Alexis (Alex) and Elenor Quick or Annie Quick.

Daniel and Joseph were brothers of Alex Lejeune, now Young.

Alex was born in 1797 and is thought to be a son of Francois Lejeune and his cousin, Marguerite Lejeune, who were married September 17, 1793. Francois was a son of Joseph Lejeune and Martine Roy, and she was a daughter of Chrystome Lejeune and Louise-Marguerite Hache dit Gallant. Joseph and Chrystome were half-brothers. The half-brothers were sons of Germain Lejeune.

This information can be found in more detail in the Dictionaire genealogique des familles acadiennes.

The first part has been published, and the second part is apparently now being prepared for publication.

Anyone interested in this lineage may want to contact Russell. His home address is 6A Silver Crescent, Stephenville, Newfoundland. A2N 3L9. The material submitted is detailed and interesting, but it is too massive to include in this format.
