Each year Les Terre-Neuviens Francais and Heritage de I'lle Rouge celebrate St-Jean Baptiste Day by sponsoring an annual walk-a-thon across the 13 km mountain trail used by each community to visit each other in the past.
On Saturday, June 26, 2004 local Mi'kmaw members participated in the annual walk across the hills from Cape St. George to Mainland. At the same time other band members participated in the walk from Mainland to Cape St. George. This was done in cooperation and support of the Acadie 400 celebrations. The purpose was to promote solidarity with our French allies and friends. The Mi'kmaq Nation celebrates 500 years of French Presence in Taqamakuk.
Saqamaw Jasen Benwah says: "I did the walk once before and I was sorry to have been unable to do the walk this year. I feel very proud that representatives of our aboriginal community were able to participate. We fully intend to participate in St-Jean Baptiste celebrates each year because we are Christians and we want to continue to celebrate our long alliance with our Francophone friends."
