June 21, 2009 is a special day for the Mi’kmaq Community located on the Port au Port Peninsula.
Penwa' Mawi-Amskwesewey L'nue'kati is pronounced Ben-wah um-skoo wess-so-whey ul-noo-eh-gut-dee.
This is a time to celebrate with pride our heritage and to share with others our traditions. All are welcomed including members of other Mi’kmaq bands and all those returning home for the reunion.
Ceremonial etiquette:
People are asked to be mindful and respectful of Mi’kmaq traditions and culture. If you are unsure about this at any time do not be afraid to ask the Chief for guidance.
Elders who visit will each be given a tobacco tie by the youth. It is traditional to the Mi’kmaq that you offer tobacco before asking elders to speak.
Tobacco ties are a sign of the great respect that we hold for our Mi'kmaq Elders.
At Sunrise A Sacred Fire Lighting Ceremony will take place @ Degrau Harbour.
At 9:00 am at the French Centre in De Grau we will raise the Mi’kmaq Grand council Flag and smudging ceremony with sweetgrass.
At 9:15 am breakfast: tea, or coffee, toast, hash browns and fried bologna will be served. This will be looked after by our Mi'kmaq women’s committee.
At 10:00 am a cultural display of crafts and artifacts will take place at the French Centre in Degrau, NL. and continue until 3:00 pm. This is hosted by Peter and Bernice Benoit.
Traditional drumming and chanting will take place that is to be followed by karaoke.
At 1:00 pm we will have a traditional feast. Fry bread and moose stew will be the highlight of the feast.
At 1:30 pm we will cut the National Aboriginal Day Cake.
At 2:00 pm a ticket will be drawn on $50.00 worth of live lobster (from Kendall's Fisheries Limited)
At 2:30 pm a give-away will take place. Anyone wishing to bring an item for the give-away is welcomed to do so.
At 3:00 pm networking social with traditional Mi'kmaq drumming and singing.
At Sunset A Sacred Fire Extinguishing Ceremony will take place @ Degrau Harbour.
This is our annual celebration where we celebrate the changing of the seasons and the beginning of summer. We must constantly bring awareness to the Mi’kmaq presence and the importance of our heritage and culture.
